1841 Census

On the 9th June 1841 a census was done and at that time Alfred Gardner was 1 year old, living with his parents William, aged 45yrs and Lucy, aged 45yrs. (these ages were not accurate as for record purposes they were rounded to groups of 5yrs). Alfred also had older siblings, Richard aged 13yrs, Lucy aged 10yrs, Charles aged 7yrs, Thomas aged 5yrs and Mathew aged 3yrs. They were living in High St Sutton (or Carshalton) and William the father was a sadler. This clarifies the previous note that he was a craftsman of leather.

Alfred GARDNER 1840 - 1923

1840
Alfred Gardner was baptised on 26th April 1840 in the Parish of Sutton in the County of Surrey, England and his parents were William Gardner (1791 - 1876) and Lucy Caines (1801 - ).

His father's trade was noted as "collar maker" and some references on the Web refer to
"collar makers were people who made the rings that held barrels together. Possibly a blacksmith type trade."
It could also refer to horse collar and harness making, a leather craft.
